On Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns each cut four players with Alabama football ties.
NFL teams have until Tuesday at 3 p.m. CDT to cut their preseason rosters of 90 players to 53 active players for the regular season.
Ten athletes who participated in high school and collegiate athletics in Alabama were laid off on Sunday. With the exception of cornerback Tony Brown, everyone was waived.
Associated with the Cleveland Browns, Tony Brown carries the bamboo scepter.
Brown is exempt from waivers since he is a vested veteran and played in his first NFL game in 2018. Rather, Cleveland ended the former Alabama defensive back’s contract, allowing him to sign with any team right away as a free agent.
Up to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the remaining players are available for claim by other teams; if they are not claimed, they will become free agents.
The following Alabama football players were cut from the NFL roster on Sunday:
-
Defensive tackle Travis Bell (Jeff Davis) by the Minnesota Vikings
-
Cornerback Tony Brown (Alabama) by the Cleveland Browns
-
Tight end Sal Cannella (Auburn
) by the Cleveland Browns
-
Guard Javion Cohen (Central-Phenix City, Alabama) by the Cleveland Browns
-
Wide receiver Grant DuBose (Park Crossing, Miles) by the Buffalo Bills
-
Defensive tackle Decarius Hawthorne (Center Point) by the Los Angeles Rams
-
Cornerback Keenan Isaac (Midfield,Alabama State
) by the Cleveland Browns
-
Wide receiver Robert Lewis (Auburn) by the Minnesota Vikings
-
Cornerback Reddy Steward (Austin,Troy
) by the Minnesota Vikings
-
Running back Tre Stewart (Jacksonville State
) by the Minnesota Vikings
Undrafted rookies Hawthorne, Lewis, and Stewart were trying to outperform the odds.
A total of 67 NFL regular-season games have been played by Brown, seven by Isaac, three by DuBose, two by Bell, and one each by Cohen and Steward.
In 2022 and 2025, Cannella was named an All-USFL tight end and an All-UFL tight end, respectively. However, he was cut at the end of the preseason for the fourth consecutive year and has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024, the Seattle Seahawks in 2023, and the Green Bay Packers in 2022 all waived Cannella.
DuBose was designated injured and waived.
