A day after threatening to imprison the Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, a communist crazy, President Donald Trump pledged on Wednesday to defend New York City.
Democratic socialist Mamdani, who won the mayoral race last week, ran on a platform of free tuition at local institutions, a $30 minimum salary by 2030, and public-run grocery stores.
Mamdani gained global attention after defeating Mario Cuomo, the former governor of New York, and others. Mamdani has been painted by Republicans as a radical Democrat whose plans will degrade New York City.
In the November general election, the New York state assemblyman will compete against Republican Curtis Sliwa, Cuomo, and Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent.
Trump commented on his Truth Social account Wednesday morning, saying, “As President of the United States, I will not allow this Communist lunatic to destroy New York.”
Trump asserted that if Mamdani is elected mayor, he will use his power to shape the future of New York City.
Don’t worry, I have all the cards and all the levers. I will restore New York City to its former glory, just as I did with the Good Ol USA! Trump made a post.
A day prior to the president’s social media post, he had threatened to put Mamdani in jail if the mayoral candidate disobeyed immigration officials who were conducting operations in the city.
Trump told reporters during a tour of the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center in Florida on Tuesday that “we’ll have to arrest him.”
Trump said of Mamdani, “Look, we don’t need a communist in this country, but if we do have one, I’m going to be watching him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”
“We’re going to be closely monitoring that,” Trump stated. “We send him money and everything he needs to run a government.”
