BET intends to halt its yearly Hip Hop and Soul Train Awards programs.
Scott Mills, the CEO of BET, revealed the information in a Billboard interview.
Mills stated in the interview that the Soul Train and Hip-Hop award ceremonies had been suspended for BET linear.
According to Mills, the awards shows have not yet been permanently canceled; instead, they have been placed on pause as the network looks for the appropriate venue for the show’s future.
As the media landscape continues to change, our team is actively considering where such award shows could be most appropriate. “They’re still here,” Mills stated.
It is more important for our team to rethink them for the evolving media world we are in than it is for them to be obsolete. I believe that more people will take franchises and say, “This may have started on linear television, but I’m going to move it to another space in the future.” Should I switch it over to streaming? Or should I transfer it to a different platform? According to VIBE magazine, Mills went on.
Other network television programs that were canceled
Many shows on HGTV have been canceled. The network declared in June that it was discontinuing four of its shows: Bargain Block, Izzy Does It, Married to Real Estate, and Farmhouse Fixer.
The network canceled Tarek El Moussa and Heather Rae Moussa’s Flipping El Moussas and Christian Haack’s Christina on the Coast in July.
