Following the discovery of harmful bacteria during testing, DermaRite Industries, a company based in New Jersey, is voluntarily recalling a number of its over-the-counter soaps and skin care products.
A DermaRite Industries recall notice states that the items included Burkholderia cepacia complex, a bacterium that can cause infections that are potentially fatal.
Because the bacteria can enter the circulation and cause potentially fatal sepsis, immunocompromised individuals who use the soaps are particularly vulnerable to infection. Using the soap increases the risk of local skin infections in healthy individuals with small skin lesions.
According to the health alert, DermaRite has not received any reports of adverse events associated with this recall as of August 9.
The following DermaRite products were recalled and distributed in Puerto Rico and the United States:
DermaKleen: Over-the-counter antiseptic lotion soap with vitamin E that is used to cleanse hands and reduce skin germs.
DermaSarra: An over-the-counter external analgesic designed to provide short-term relief from itching brought on by mild skin irritations such sunburn, dry skin, bug bites, and detergents.
According to the business, KleenFoam is an over-the-counter antimicrobial foam soap with aloe vera that is recommended for handwashing to reduce bacteria on the skin following diaper changes, after helping sick people, or prior to coming into touch with someone receiving medical attention or treatment.
PeriGiene: An over-the-counter antiseptic cleaner designed specifically for the perineal region.
