Alabama city faces historic showdown between its first mayor and the current one

A list of mayors dating back decades or even centuries can be found in the history of most cities. Only three have been born to Pinson.

Additionally, on Tuesday, two of them will be up for election.

On Tuesday, voters in one of Jefferson County’s newest towns will choose their four-year leader.

These include Hoyt Sanders, the first mayor of Pinson, who held the office for 16 years, and Robbie Roberts, the city’s current mayor.

In 2004, the long-standing town of Pinson, located in northwest Jefferson County, became an incorporated city. Roberts was appointed as the current mayor less than a year ago, and the new city, which has a population of roughly 7,140, has had two elected mayors.

Dezmond Boudreaux is another candidate for mayor.

Born in Louisiana, Boudreaux has been a resident of Alabama since 2019.

He described his candidacy for mayor in his response to Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey.

I’ve spent a lot of time studying politics and economics since I’m passionate about them. In the survey, Boudreaux responded, “I would be the first outsider to do so if elected.”I know how strange things are here because I’m from outside of Pinson. Other than those related to improving Pinson, I have no affiliations with any other interests.

A neutral online political encyclopedia covering local, state, and federal politics is called Ballotpedia.

Boudreaux informed the gathering that halting a steady population decrease and reducing Pinson’s excessive reliance on sales tax are two of the city’s concerns.

He suggested that the best way to achieve this would be to make Pinson a destination for young people. ensuring that while others profit from federal and state initiatives and trends, Pinson is not left behind.

In Tuesday’s municipal election for mayor and council, Roberts is running to keep his seat for a full term.

According to his campaign website, Roberts has been a mainstay in the Pinson region for decades, even though he has only been in that position for a little over a year.

He began his public service in 1995 as a member of the Palmerdale Fire District Board of Trustees, where he held the position for almost 17 years, 12 of those as president.

In addition, he has been the chairman of the Pinson Library Board and a member of the planning and zoning commission.

On this page, Roberts stated that in addition to collaborating with private companies to keep creating opportunities for Pinson, he hopes to maintain regional cooperation within the Birmingham metropolitan area.

Roberts is steadfast in his promise to impose no new taxes. According to Roberts, businesses operating in Pinson can avoid paying taxes on residents if they pay their fair share of taxes.

After Roberts left his position to become mayor, Sanders was appointed to the city council in November 2024, bringing him back to Pinson City Hall.

On social media, Sanders recapped his prior achievements as mayor, which included developing Bicentennial Park and Splashpad, paving roads, purchasing a city hall building, and establishing a library. He also mentioned a number of grant-funded infrastructure initiatives.

Sanders announced his comeback as a mayoral candidate on his Facebook site, writing, “We also contributed thousands of dollars to our schools.”We accomplished all of this while keeping a solid financial foundation and obtaining excellent yearly audits.
