Alabama student, friend killed by off-duty deputy in Florida crash: ‘He always brought people together’

A beloved young guy who was renowned for constantly supporting others is recalled as a University of Alabama student who was slain while crossing a Florida road with a friend.

Both Nicole Moore of Calera and Jackson Cunningham of Hoover passed away early on Saturday after being hit by an off-duty Escambia County sheriff’s officer who was returning home from an off-duty assignment.

Both 20-year-olds Cunningham and Moore were found deceased at the scene.

According to father Les Cunningham, he was incredible. He always brought people together and was adored.

He claimed to have the entire globe in front of him.

The collision occurred in Florida’s Escambia County at 2:57 a.m. on State Road 292 and River Road.

The 47-year-old Pensacola driver struck the pedestrians as they were crossing State Road 292 as he was heading east, according to the Florida Highway Patrol report.

According to FHP Capt. Jason King, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office employee was neither on duty nor actively patrolling. As with all of the crashes we regrettably have to look into, the Florida Highway Patrol is still meticulous and focused on this one.

After completing his sophomore year at UA, where he was a member of the fraternity Theta Chi, Cunningham was taking a year off from college.

Theta Chi wrote on social media, “He was a man of unwavering character, faith, and kindness, and his impact on the lives of others will last forever.” His grin and laughter filled the entire room he was in, and his departure creates an indescribable void in our fraternity. Brother, till we cross paths again.

Moore attended Paul Mitchell The School in Birmingham to study cosmetology.

The school wrote on Facebook, “We are grieving for Nicole Moore, one of our talented and stunning future professionals.”Nicole filled every space she entered with warmth, light, and laughter. Her talent, friendliness, and sense of humor made a lasting effect on both staff and students.

Cunningham played basketball at Hoover High School, where he graduated.

He was working on installing fiber optic cable and was ready to take a break after two years of education.

Les Cunningham stated that although he had performed exceptionally well in school, he wasn’t certain if college was the right path for him. He didn’t want to put us through something that he didn’t believe was worth it.

According to his father, his maturity level had been completely unrestrained over the last six or eight months. As a parent, I was at last at peace with the decision-making process.

According to Les Cunningham, his son found out about the death of one of his pals just last week as they were eating dinner together. Last weekend, Cunningham and the friend were scheduled to participate in a poker tournament.

He was truly taken aback by it, and we began discussing how fleeting life is and how fortunate we are to wake up each morning. “Les Cunningham said.”

“I gave my life to Christ,” he stated. According to Les Cunningham, he intended to be baptized at Church of the Highlands in August. He was on his own spiritual journey, and I thought, “Wow.”

“I knew he was ready when this happened, but I wasn’t,” the distraught parent stated. However, it brought me serenity.

According to his father, Cunningham had a close relationship with his mother, Kelly Borganelli, and other members of his family. He was a father figure to his 13-year-old sister and best friends with his older sister.

We had a really intimate bond. Les Cunningham said he could tell me anything. Our friendship was the strongest.

Cunningham continued to enjoy playing basketball as a pastime and worked out frequently.

He claimed to be a man’s man. He was admired by his pals.

According to Les Cunningham, if you ask his friends what they think, he encouraged them to be better people. He encouraged them to be better people and was competitive.

He was very supportive of them, guiding them to Christ, helping them with their exercises, and encouraging them to consider their futures, he claimed. He simply had such a wonderful impact.

Last weekend, Cunningham and a few of his pals went to the beach. According to his father, Cunningham had known Moore and one of her friends from college, and they had met them on the beach earlier in the day.

They were on their way to the beach access to start crabbing when the crash occurred.

The car hit Cunningham and Moore but missed two of him. According to Les Cunningham, it killed them right away.

After his son passed away, Les Cunningham said a neighbor told him that he had lost his own kid over ten years prior and that he still thinks about him every day.

Les Cunningham remarked, “I hope it gets to every day because right now I’m thinking about him every minute.” However, knowing that he was prepared for that day has given me comfort.

He said, “I just thought I’d get to see him again.” I know he would be the greatest father ever, so I’m devastated that I can’t see him in that role.
