Two months after performing at Birmingham’s Coca-Cola Amphitheater, Cheap Trick is returning to Alabama.
The well-known classic rock group, which has released singles including “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police,” and more, has announced that they will play a headline event at the Oxford Performing Arts Center, located at 100 Choccolocco St. in Oxford, on October 12.
Cheap Trick’s schedule, which continues through December 2025, now includes 11 additional events, including the concert. This summer, the industrious rock band toured as Rod Stewart’s opening act, performing dates that included an August 2 show at Birmingham’s brand-new 9,300-seat amphitheater.
Additionally, Cheap Trick has scheduled 15 gigs with Heart on the Royal Flush Tour, which runs from November 12 to December 21 this year.
The band’s 7 p.m. gig in Oxford is now selling tickets for $79–$109 on the venue’s website.
Famous for their longevity, sense of humor, work ethic, and broad influence on the power-pop aesthetic, Cheap Trick was founded in Illinois in the 1970s. Along with live albums, compilations, and EPs, the band has 20 studio albums to its name. In Color (1977), Heaven Tonight (1978), Cheap Trick in Budokan (1978), and Dream Police (1979) are some of Cheap Trick’s best songs.
According to the band’s publicist, Cheap Trick is a part of the very fabric of American music, inspiring and entertaining generations with their distinctive blend of rock ‘n’ roll, their own brand of cheeky wit, and enormous melodies and razorblade riffs.
Three original members are still touring with the band: bassist Tom Petersson, 75; singer Robin Zander, 72; and guitarist Rick Nielsen, 76.
The original drummerAfter performing with Cheap Trick until 2010, Bun. E. Carlos was replaced by Rick Nielsen’s son, Daxx Nielsen. Singer-guitarist Robin Taylor Zander, the son of Robin Zander, also performs as a guest artist on the band’s tours.
Kid Rock inducted Cheap Trick into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
According to the Rock Hall website, Cheap Trick’s playful, mischievous, and cartoonish style demonstrated that bands don’t need to take themselves seriously in order to sell out stadiums. Cheap Trick never lost their sense of humor while touring nonstop with a wild show of showmanship, musical virtuosity, and custom guitars.
The band’s shows feature well-known and beloved old tunes, interspersed with newer songs. For instance, Ain’t That a Shame, Dream Police, California Man, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender, Clock Strikes Ten, She’s Tight, Never Had a Lot to Lose, and more were on the Cheap Trick set list at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater.
Florida singer and drummer Donnie Morgan praised the Birmingham performance on social media. Morgan stated in a Facebook post on August 6 that the equally fantastic and classic Cheap Trick! opened for Rod (Stewart). Without a doubt, it was incredible, and each song transported everyone back to their younger selves! And trust me when I say that both bands performed a fantastic show and rocked!
Over the years, Cheap Trick has given multiple performances in the Birmingham region, including a collaboration with Heart at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in 2016, a headline performance at Iron City in 2014, and a show with Def Leppard at Oak Mountain in 2009. In the 1980s, the band also played at Boutwell Auditorium.
