Birmingham residents should keep in mind that pyrotechnics and celebratory shootings are not only prohibited but also have the potential to be lethal as the Fourth of July festivities get underway.
Police frequently put up patrols throughout the holidays to make sure locals are partying safely, but will that resolve this recurring issue? Some locals claim they are tired of the sounds of pyrotechnics and shooting that typically accompany Independence Day.
I’m not at all bothered by the fireworks. There are a lot of fools with guns out on the East side who shoot hundreds of rounds without caring about the outcome, but it does! Simply put, quit! Richard Rutledge said, “It’s nuts,” in a Nextdoor post, advising locals not to light Christmas fireworks.
People, please stop this madness! What goes up will come down!
According to reports, cops had to take cover from falling gunfire on New Year’s Day in 2024. Additionally, celebratory gunfire wounded one person in Tuscaloosa and two in Birmingham.
As she heard gunfire all around her, city councilor Valerie Abbott compared her journey home on New Year’s to a war zone.
During the Birmingham City Council meeting on January 2, Abbott stated, “I realized that I might be shot to death on my way home by one of those idiots who are shooting their guns in the air.”
According to reports, Truman Fitzgerald, a spokesman for the Birmingham Police Department, stated that police were out in force on July 4th night to apprehend lawbreakers.
Fitzgerald told WBRCat at the time, “We can’t catch everyone, but we can catch a lot more than we used to.”
Earlier past year, an Alabama man was shot in his bed amid celebratory gunshots.
Police warn that continuing the shooting may result in jail time or a fine, yet it still goes on. Even with advancements in shot detector technology, policing it is still challenging.
Residents were recently informed by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department of the risks associated with celebratory shootings.
Celebratory shootings are risky in a number of ways, Henry Irby, a sheriff’s office spokesperson, told CBS 42.
People sometimes assume that a bullet is not hazardous merely because it did not come straight from a pistol, but in reality, it is extremely dangerous and can even be fatal in certain situations.
Before publication, AL.com contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and the Birmingham Police Department but did not hear back.
