You might qualify for a portion of a $4.5 million settlement from GameStop if you bought a video game from their website within the last five years and had a public Facebook profile at the time.
According to the lawsuit’s webpage, Alejandro Aldana and Scott Gallie v. GameStop, Inc. is a class action lawsuit that was filed in a federal court in New York this year on behalf of individuals who bought video games from the GameStop website between August 18, 2020, and April 17, 2025, and who at the time of the purchase kept a public Facebook profile using their real name.

According to the lawsuit, GameStop violated the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by allegedly disclosing to Facebook, through the Facebook Tracking Pixel, the personally identifiable information (PII) of its online video game consumers without their consent throughout this time.
According to the lawsuit, PII is defined by the VPPA as information that can be used to identify an individual who has requested or received particular video materials or services from a video tape service provider.
The website claims that although GameStop has accepted the settlement to avoid the risks and costs of pursuing the lawsuit further, it denies any legal violations.
How much can eligible parties receive?
According to the complaint homepage, claimants may choose to receive a cash payment of up to $5 or a voucher worth up to $10 that can be used on GameStop’s website as part of the settlement terms.
The claimant has until August 15 to submit a letter to the court objecting to the settlement.
When will they receive payment?
According to the webpage, the court will convene a hearing on September 18 (the final approval hearing) to determine whether to approve the settlement.
The website will be updated with information on the settlement and the expected dates of payment.
There are other cases concerning video games outside the GameStop deal. More details about a settlement involving the well-known game Fortnite can be found here.
