After leading police on a crazy chase and injuring several officers, a 36-year-old Chelsea man is facing a number of crimes.
According to jail records, Cody Blake Wilson is being held without bond on accusations of attempted murder, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property, evading arrest, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, drug possession, and property theft.
Wilson is being held on six requests to revoke his bond on prior crimes, and he has a long history of arrests.
Edward Delmore, the chief of police in Pelham, stated that he must stay behind bars. Without a doubt, this is a man who would have harmed someone if he hadn’t been caught.
During the pursuit and subsequent arrest, at least four cops were slightly hurt, including an Alabama state trooper who, according to Delmore, Wilson purposefully targeted with his car. An additional cop was pricked with a needle.
Every officer is performing well.
According to Delmore, the incident started late Wednesday afternoon when Pelham detectives got a tip that there might have been a stolen car in the 3000 block of Pelham Parkway.
When two detectives saw the car, they attempted to arrest the driver, who was eventually identified as Wilson.
According to the chief, they had him at gunpoint when he ran away.
After that, marked police units joined the chase, which proceeded south on I-65.
Wilson struck a state trooper who was trying to apply spike strips at mile marker 228.
According to the police who saw the event and the footage we watched, Wilson attempted to hit the trooper on purpose, Delmore stated. Fortunately, it was only a glance.
Wilson was previously wanted on a felony theft of property allegation, according to the chief.
I’ve been informed that a few weeks prior, this same person was trying to escape when he collided with a Calera police officer, who was hurt and is currently off duty, or at least on light duty.
Wilson was stopped by police using a pit maneuver at mile marker 233 a short while later. He fled on foot after losing control of his car.
Delmore claimed that after being apprehended, he started to struggle and elude capture.
According to Calera Police Chief David Hyche, one of his officers was likely stabbed with a syringe, and another was bitten. According to Delmore, such wounds were likewise mild.
Shelby Baptist Medical Center was the destination for Wilson.
The handcuffed defendant managed to escape from the stretcher he was on and reach the front of the ambulance in an attempt to steal it, Delmore said, as a medical professional was trying to fix the straps keeping him down.
Luckily, the chief explained, the keys were not in the ambulance. Our officers managed to bring him down.
According to Delmore, one of the Pelham officers was slightly hurt in the shoulder during the altercation.
Hyche added on Wednesday that his officers had previously pursued Wilson in at least two instances.
According to Delmore, it happens much too frequently for a criminal with serious charges to be freed before committing another crime and frequently endangering lives, as this person did yesterday. I believe that our legal system ought to pay attention to it.
ALEA, Pelham, Alabaster, Jemison police, and deputies from Shelby, Jefferson, and Chilton counties were among the several agencies who provided assistance in the event.
A suspect’s decision to elude law enforcement puts the public, law enforcement, and themselves in danger. Thursday, Hyche said. As far as I know, this is the second time we have had to go after this specific person.
“We are extremely fortunate that the trooper who was hit by the suspect’s car was not killed or seriously hurt,” Hyche added. Since our officer got poked with a needle, we are currently awaiting the results of tests for infectious diseases.
According to Hyche, the practice persists even though we shouldn’t have to deal with the same criminals repeatedly and put these officers’ lives in jeopardy. Although it has obviously not resolved the issue, I am thankful that Alabama now has a felony for trying to avoid the authorities. In order to keep dangerous offenders off the streets, I hope that our courts and lawmakers will take a look at this and cooperate with us.
