Brendan Donovan, a second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, was selected as a National League reserve on Sunday, making him the fifth former South Alabama player selected for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Atlanta’s Truist Park will host the 95th MLB All-Star Game on July 15 at 7 p.m. CDT. The game will be broadcast on FOX.
The game’s starting lineups were made public last week, and on Sunday, the pitchers and reserves were disclosed.
In his fourth season with the Cardinals, Donovan will be attending the All-Star Game for the first time. After his third season at South Alabama, the former Enterprise High School standout was taken by St. Louis in the seventh round of the 2018 draft.
Donovan has a.431 slugging percentage,.367 on-base average, and.296 batting average in 82 games this season. With 22 in 2025, he is fifth in doubles and fifth in batting average among National League batters.
Donovan, a versatile glove in the field, has appeared in 65 games for the Cardinals in 2025 as a second baseman, 17 in left field, 6 at shortstop, and 2 as a designated hitter.
Luis Gonzalez, formerly of South Alabama, played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in five MLB All-Star games in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005.
Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lieber was selected for one MLB All-Star Game in 2001, New York Mets outfielder Lance Johnson in 1996, and Cardinals third baseman David Freese in 2012.
The MLB All-Star Game starting lineups were determined by fan voting. Player votes were used to select eight pitchers and one reserve at each of the other nine positions for each league’s team. In order to guarantee that each team had at least one representation, the Commissioner’s Office then added six players to the rosters.
