Wesley Person, an NBA first-round draft pick and former Auburn men’s basketball star, will become Wilcox Central’s next head coach, the school said Wednesday.
Person, a Brantley High School alumnus, will be returning to the state for the second time.
He had previously been the head coach of the DME High School (Fla.) regional team and Greenville High. On May 27, he was named head coach of Samuel Wolfson School for Advanced Studies in Jacksonville, Fla.
Additionally, he was the head coach of the girls’ basketball team at Enterprise State Community College for a while.
Person, who is well-known for his 3-point shooting, had a remarkable collegiate basketball career at Auburn, where he was named to the All-SEC team several times and had his No. 11 jersey honored by the school.
Before being selected 23rd overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1994 NBA draft, he averaged 19.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists during his time with the Tigers. He also ranked second in program history in 3-pointers made (262), third in total points (2,066), and fourth in career scoring average (19.1 PPG).
Before playing his final NBA season with the Denver Nuggets in 2005, Person spent 11 years with the Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, and Miami Heat.
During his NBA career, the Auburn alum averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
