Grocery delivery service to offer worker benefit Alabama lawmaker called a ‘historic milestone’

Later this year, Shipt will launch its first portable benefits program for its professional shoppers in Alabama.

Customers in the state will be eligible to register an account with Stride, a portable benefits platform, on October 1.

October 1 through December 31 is when the first quarterly qualifying period is held. Shipt will start contributing in January 2026.

At that point, businesses, including app-based ones, are permitted to voluntarily contribute to an independent contractor’s portable benefits under the Alabama Portable Benefits Act.

While employees do not pay taxes on the value received, it enables businesses to deduct the expense.

Shipt launched the initiative in Utah earlier. A California-based business called Stride provides health, dental, and vision insurance to employees who do not have access to conventional employer-based coverage.

The transferable benefits act is a historic milestone for Alabama’s workforce, according to state senator Arthur Orr, who sponsored it.

According to him, the goal is to enable people to create their own financial safety nets in a modern, adaptable economy.

During each quarterly qualifying window, Shipt will credit their account with the equivalent of 4% of eligible shoppers’ pre-tip profits.

The business claims that these payments are tax deductible in Alabama and can be used for retirement savings, tuition reimbursement, health, dental, and vision insurance, among other perks.

According to Mindy Reher, vice president of experiential operations at Shipt, Alabama consumers can now advance toward their financial objectives without sacrificing the flexibility they receive from earning on the Shipt platform.

The initiative permits benefit contributions to follow their job onto those other applications because some app-based workers make money on several platforms.
