In the Seattle Seahawks preseason finale on Saturday, rookie Jalen Milroe went all the way under center and lost three fumbles. The former Alabama quarterback later stated that there was no reason to be disheartened.
“You’re not a competitor if you’re discouraged,” Milroe remarked. I adore football. I adore it in every way. The triumphs, setbacks, disappointments, and highs. You must be a football fan. Thus, it is a component of the game. So it’s my first start, dude. Additionally, it’s a fantastic chance to expand on it. It simply is, man. Just continuing to compete and improve excites me.
Milroe, who was selected in the third round of the April 25 draft, had been benched in Seattle’s opening two preseason games. However, the Seahawks benched backup Drew Lock and starting Sam Darnold for the game’s conclusion.
“To be able to start my first NFL game, regardless of when it is, is a dream come true,” Milroe remarked. I want to express my gratitude to coach Mike Macdonald and the entire offensive staff for letting me start for the first time. Simply being on the field was an amazing opportunity, especially here at Lambeau Field, which is such a historic stadium. Being able to compete out there was a lot of joy. The only thing left to do is to continue as an offense and build on today.
Milroe ran seven times for 31 yards and completed 13 of 24 passes for 148 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in a 20–7 loss against the Green Bay Packers. With 11:59 remaining, Milroe completed a five-play, 57-yard drive with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Cody White that was 18 yards long.
In the first quarter, Milroe fumbled on a sack, which Green Bay recovered at the 30-yard line in Seattle. On a fourth-and-1 play from the Seattle 44 in the second quarter, he ran for three yards and lost the football. On the Seahawks offense’s last play of the game, a shotgun snap from the Green Bay 22-yard line escaped him, resulting in the last fumble.
“You have to build on every quarterback position turnover,” Milroe stated. You must tend to the football. I’m responsible for all of those. I need to improve my ball security. It’s difficult. They will swipe at the ball while you are in the trenches. There are some large, powerful men who weigh more than I do. You must keep the ball safe. It occurs. We didn’t lose the game, though, because of that one play. You must continue to compete. You must continue to construct. It’s a component of the game. As a result, I will grow and learn from that.
Whether it’s good, awful, or ugly, never give up, never give up, never give up, and have an optimistic outlook. You have to be the same person every day when you go into the field, no matter what—good, bad, or different. On the sidelines, you must continue to get encouragement. As you get closer to each and every rep, you must maintain that hunger attitude.
After the game, Macdonald had a message similar to that.
“Man, just keep chopping away,” McDonald remarked. Continue laying the groundwork. He’s out there, playing his tail off, and we’re going to learn some things from him. He is aware that caring for the football is likely the most important thing. And even though we’ll grow and learn from it, I believe that getting him out there and giving him this experience was well worth it. He will undoubtedly be able to expand on this in the future.
The best part is that he didn’t even flinch. Despite a few defeats previously, he persisted in his struggle, dude. worked diligently and had a chance to regain the game and give ourselves a chance to win it in the end right up until the very end.
On September 7, the Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers in the first game of their 17-game regular season schedule.
There have been hints during training camp that the Seahawks will use a variety of plays to capitalize on Milroe’s versatility as a gadget player or change-of-pace quarterback. Milroe replaced Darnold on the opening series to take a third-and-one snap in Seattle’s second preseason game, and he ran for a first down.
“I anticipate being ready whenever my opportunity arises,” Milroe stated. I’m not sure when that chance will come along, but I’m going to be my best self when it does. Additionally, when I enter the game, I will be trusted. I will definitely shine if I play because the coaching staff believes in me, and it will come from my work habits, practice habits, and the things I do behind the scenes. I’m confident that better times are coming.
It’s the preseason, you know. It is unlikely that you will win a Super Bowl today. Today, no team will win a Super Bowl. It’s all about seasoning, so I’m simply thrilled about the chance because it will be another chance for me to play.
