In Mobile, it has been feeling like monsoon season lately, which makes the next events seem even more fitting. It’s time for Tiki.
Monday, August 18, is the first day of Mobile Tiki Week, which ends on Saturday, August 23. With 32 participating sites, including pubs, restaurants, and breweries, the beverage tasting event in 2025 will carry on the legacy of growth.
Not bad for what began as a one-night, one-venue party that was really simply a way for the Haberdasher’s general manager and occasional bartender, Roy Clark, to indulge his passion for tiki cocktails.
According to Clark, it has truly turned into a beast. You may actually start your day out tiki-ing with breakfast tacos and coffee with a tropical theme, receive tiki lunch deals at several places, visit a brewery for tiki beers after work, and then end the day by relaxing at your favorite bars and restaurants.
Perhaps this begs the question: Just what is tiki?
It’s not precisely anything. The artisan drink, however, experienced a resurgence with the repeal of prohibition in 1933. As a result of the fact that many veterans had served in the Pacific, a theme of fancy rum beverages and island-themed cocktails gained popularity in the late 1940s. Tiki fluctuated in popularity during the ensuing decades, peaking in popular music, film, and other media.
It all comes down to the handmade cocktail, according to Clark and other enthusiasts.
According to Clark, I first approached tiki from a purely mixological perspective since, before the phrase was ever coined, early tiki cocktail pioneers like Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic, and Mariano Licudine were creating intricate handmade cocktails. However, I soon fell in love with the classic tiki culture, aesthetics, and history in addition to the drinks.
Participating establishments will serve food and drinks with tiki themes. For information on upcoming special activities, including a pig roast and kick-off luau at Braided River Brewing on Saturday, August 16, check out https://www.facebook.com/MobileTikiWeek.
Naturally, attendees are urged to dress in their best tropical attire, and there is a Spotify soundtrack to help them get in the mood. According to the organizers, MOB City Rides, a downtown ride service, plans to convert its fleet of golf cart taxis into mobile party barges.
