A recall of shrimp sold at Walmart has been issued by the Food and Drug Administration because of potential radioactive chemical contamination.
Retailers and customers are being cautioned by the EPA not to sell or ingest specific lots of raw frozen Great Value shrimp that are available at Walmart locations in 13 states.
The agency said in a notification dated August 19 that the frozen shrimp, which came from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, a facility in Indonesia, violated the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act because it may have been tainted with the man-made radioactive isotope Cesium-137 (Cs-137).
Reports of Cs-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp items made by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati are presently being looked into by the FDA. The FDA was notified by U.S. Customs & Border Protection that Cs-137 had been found in shipping containers at U.S. ports in Miami, Savannah, Houston, and Los Angeles.
The FDA has not found any Cs-137 in shrimp that are sold in Walmart shops as of August 19.
The FDA is warning customers not to ingest or serve specific lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp that are available at Walmart shops in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia, despite the fact that the recall is preventative:
