A automobile accident in Cleburne County on Sunday morning claimed the life of a South Carolina woman and injured another.
Around 7:23 a.m. on Sunday, Elizabeth E. Melton, 74, lost her life when her car collided with another vehicle and was struck by a tractor-trailer. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports that she was declared dead at the collision site, which was approximately two miles east of Heflin.
James Johnson, 65, of Covington, Georgia, was driving a 2019 Land Rover Discovery when Melton, of Summerville, South Carolina, struck it with her 2024 Buick Encore, the agency said.
According to a press release issued on Sunday, the Buick was struck by a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Joshua J. Waiters, 36, of Roanoke, Virginia, following the initial impact.
One of the passengers in the Buick was David Clark, 62. He was brought to Carrolton, Georgia’s Tanner Medical Center.
The event took place close to the 207-mile marker on Interstate 20. An inquiry is in progress.
