Trump joining Chelsea for Club World Cup trophy ceremony leaves star ‘confused’

Donald Trump created an awkward moment during the Club World Cup trophy ceremony when the president was in the middle of Chelsea’s celebration.

After handing the trophy to the winners Sunday, Trump remained on the stage at MetLife Stadium.

“I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused,” Chelsea captain Cole Palmer told the

Associated Press.

The Athletic reported that it seemed as if Trump wanted to lift the trophy.

“It was all completely bonkers and akin to… nope, there is literally absolutely nothing this has been akin to in the history of football or the world. It’s a totally unprecedented occurrence,” the outlet wrote in its

recap of the championship game.

At the start of the trophy ceremony, the president with met with a loud chorus of boos in the stadium:

as top player of the tournament after scoring the first two goals in

Chelsea’s 3-0 smothering of Paris Saint-Germain
