Zachary Lee, 34, of Tallassee will remain in the Elmore County Jail without bond, after a preliminary hearing and Aniah’s Law hearing this afternoon before Judge Glenn Goggans.
Lee is charged with murder/domestic violence in connection with the death of his wife, Bethany Lee, last month.
Elmore County deputies were called to the Lee residence in the early morning hours of May 24 after Zachary Lee made a 911 call. He reportedly told dispatchers his wife had shot him, and he had returned fire, but Bethany ran into their home.
Sheriff Bill Franklin told the EAN that dispatchers urged Lee to enter the home and check on the status of his wife, but he declined.
When deputies arrived, they found Zachary Lee with minor injuries to his legs. Bethany Lee was discovered dead inside the home with a gunshot wound to her lower back and another that traveled through her neck and head.
Evidence presented showed that Bethany’s wounds are from two different weapons. When officers found her, she was holding a gun in her left hand, which matched the wound on her hip, but not the shot into her neck and head which was a larger caliber.
Robinson said that Zachary Lee reportedly told deputies no other weapons were in the home while still on scene, but a later a search found multiple weapons. One of those was reportedly found in a boat, along with Zachary Lee’s car keys and work ID.
Zachary Lee is being represented by Attorney Kenny James.
Judge Glenn Goggans did find probable cause to hold Lee without bond. Lee’s case will eventually go to an Elmore County Grand Jury.
